The galerie lange + pult is pleased to present, for the first time, works by the late Swiss artist Josef Staub in a solo exhibition. From August 30 to October 12, 2024, sculptures, plastiques, collages, and drawings will be on display. Staub is renowned for his profound understanding of materials and his ability to harmonize space and form.
Josef Staub’s oeuvre encompasses various groups of works that demonstrate his experimental spirit and versatility. His stainless steel sculptures, such as “JOY” (2018) and “SALAM” (2006), embody a fusion of stability and elegance by capturing and reflecting light, thus maintaining a constant dialogue with their surroundings. These pieces highlight Staub’s ability to create monumental sculptures that, despite their material heft, convey a sense of lightness. Complementing these works are a series of plaster sculptures, such as “KING” (c. 1985) and “HANNIBAL” (c. 1985). These pieces reveal Staub’s sensitivity to the potential of materials and add a quieter dimension to the exhibition.
The colorful drawings, mainly produced in the 1970s, broaden the scope of this exhibition. In these gouaches and collages, Staub’s sense of color and composition is evident, with many of these works serving as studies for his later sculptural pieces.

They offer insight into his artistic development and illustrate how Staub consistently explored similar themes of balance and structure across different media. His works express his deep engagement with the principles of form, material, and space.
