We are pleased to present the upcoming exhibition of Ulrich Wollfram here in our gallery in Zurich, dedicating him a retrospective of his oeuvre.
Wolfram Ullrich was born in 1961 in Würzburg, Germany. He graduated from the University of Stuttgart in 1985 with a degree in art history and from the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design in 1986. He has received several scholarships and prizes, including the André Evard Art Award from the Messmer Foundation in 2010. He currently lives and works in Stuttgart as a freelance artist.
His initial artistic focus was on the concept of expanded painting, which posits that every painting, in its material essence, is also an object. His experiments in realising this expansion of painting, which began in the 1980s, and the influences of Mondrian and Frank Stella led the artist to his illusion-generating works, which create the impression of sheer weightlessness. The artist refers to these works as ‘sculptural structures’, combining painting with sculpture in a way that makes it impossible to categorise them definitively within a single genre.
