Biography
Gina Proenza’s work draws on the use of words to explore the power dynamics associated with language. From gargoyles emerging from motorized tongues to light boxes transformed into musical scores, or even rocking benches that encourage the audience to interact with one another: language—whether spoken, written, allegorical, or anatomical—lies at the heart of her works. Woven from her Colombian and French heritage and her two native languages, her practice is expressed through sculptures, installations, drawings, and videos.
Gina Proenza (born 1994 in Bogotá, Colombia) lives and works in Lausanne. She lived in Colombia, France, and Belgium before settling in Switzerland in 2013. Gina Proenza has had solo exhibitions at the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne (2024), the Musée des Beaux-Arts in La Chaux-de-Fonds (2023), the KunstHalle in St. Gallen (2023), the Centre d’art de Neuchâtel (2020), and the Swiss Cultural Center in Paris (2018). She has also exhibited her work in Shanghai (ChenShan), Zurich (Last Tango), and Berlin (PS120).
