Portrait
While in the 80s Sergio Sister was still mainly interested in painting, in the 90s he made an almost accidental discovery which led him to make a change in the genre. Through the use of wood – in the form of strips and boxes – he moved from two-dimensional painting to the three-dimensionality of reliefs. Thus his works can be classified at the border between painting and sculpture. The artist always had the goal of incorporating the light coming from outside and of creating a structure through his application of paint. Thus he succeeded in bringing a play of form, shadow and light onto the canvas. The effort to create a perfect interplay between the luminosity of light, the functionality of the external appearance and the love of detail is the result of years of inspiration, which finally find their perfection in his caixas and fundos.
Sergio Sister, born 1948, lives and works in Sao Paulo. His work refers to the current of American Minimalism as well as to the Neo-Concrete movement of the 1960s in Brazil. Today his work is represented in numerous public collections, such as the Museu de Arte Moderna and the Pinacoteca do Estado in
